About Us

Location

The Huts at Woodthorpes is located in Assington, a village in Suffolk, which is two miles from the Essex border, and ten miles from the large town of Colchester (20 mins drive). We are roughly two hours by car from London. When you book, we’ll provide detailed directions on how to find us!

Assington is close to the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Beauty and a short walk to the Nature Reserves of Spouse’s Vale and Arger Fen. Less than 20 minutes away you will find yourself in one of the best-preserved medieval villages in England, Lavenham.

Food and drink

The huts are supplied with tea, coffee and sugar. A 20 minute walk into the local village you’ll find Assington Farm Shop and Assington Country Kitchen – offering cakes, pastries and lunches. A little further into Assington brings you to the Shoulder of Mutton, a Historic English Inn offering casual and refined dining.

For light refreshments, there’s also The Foxes Den – a coffee house which is a 5 minute drive away. For dinner or larger lunches, there are several good local pubs within a short driving distance, including The Anchor, The Crown and The Angel.

Things to know & what to expect

Woodthorpes is a family owned farm, predominantly used as a stable yard for our own horses. There may be other visitors who are training their horses in the equestrian arena on site.

With beautiful walks directly accessible from the huts and bicycles available to hire, there is plenty to see and do. The site, however, is rural so if you wish to travel further afield and explore more of what Suffolk has to offer, we would advise bringing a car. We operate a self-check in but will be on hand if you need us. There is designated private parking next to the huts.

A little more about us

We’re Liz and Sam. We are part of three generations living on Woodthorpes Farm. Our family bought the farm in 2014 and since then we’ve made a few changes including renovating a barn into a family home we now live in. We built solar panels onto the farm to become more sustainable and energy efficient. We have also spent the last few years developing a small allotment on the farm growing fresh vegetables which are sold to local farm shops. Our farm is now home to chickens and goats, as well as horses and dogs.
